Gardeners usually have many questions about what they can and cannot plant in their own gardens.
One of the most common questions is: What’s the best way to start my seeds?
There are a few different ways to do this, so let’s take a look at the most popular methods.
First, we will take a look at using compost. Composting is great for the environment and uses up many things you may have thrown away. You can find composting instructions online or at your local gardening store.
Once you have your compost ready, you can use it to plant your seeds in. You should water your seeds first, before putting them into the compost. Put a few inches of the compost into a container and then add water until it is evenly moist. After this, you can put the compost into seed starting cells, pots or directly into the ground and keep the compost moist until your seeds sprout.
You can also start your seeds indoors. If you do this, you should transplant your seedlings into larger containers before the weather gets too warm. Once the weather is warm enough and there is no more chance of frost, you can plant your seedlings directly into the ground.
The last way to start your seeds is directly into the ground. This should only be done if you live in a climate that does not have any chance of frost. If you have to bring your plants inside for the winter, it can damage their development.
Let’s take a look at the supplies you will need to start your seeds. You will need pots or containers to start your seeds in. It is important to make sure your containers have good drainage, so the water can drain out of the containers but the soil won’t wash out. You can find containers at your local garden center or you can repurpose items such as milk jugs, plastic take-out containers or other similar things.
You will also need something to label your plants. Once your seeds start growing, it is important to be able to identify them. You can use markers, tape, zip ties, anything that will make the seed stand out from the rest. It is also important to keep notes about each type of seed you plant. This will help you keep track of which seed is doing well and will help you pick out favorites to plant again next season.
Now that you have the containers and labeling set up, let’s get your seeds! There are different places you can get your seeds, such as big box stores, local gardening centers and online. It is important to check the seeds before you buy them to make sure they are good. To check if the seeds are good, take a few out and prepare a pot or container to see if they will sprout. If the seeds sprout, buy as much of that seed as you can because it is fresh.
If the seeds do not sprout, pick out new ones and try again. It is better to be sure than to waste time and money on non-growing seeds.
Once you get your seeds home, it is important to keep them safe from pets and children. Cats like to chew on anything and everything, so if you have a cat be sure to keep your seeds safely tucked away. Also be careful about keeping the seeds out because many children don’t know how dangerous plants can be. The seed coatings can be poisonous if eaten and the seeds and plants themselves can cause allergic reactions in some people. If you have small children or pets, consider keeping your seeds in a safe until it is time to plant.
Once you get your seeds planted, water them thoroughly. Then keep the soil moist but not sopping wet. Most seed packages will tell you how deep to plant the seeds and how much sunlight the seedlings will need. Follow the instructions on the package. After about two weeks, your plants should start to sprout and grow.
Water them regularly and keep them out of the reach of pets and children.
After your plants have sprouted and are growing steadily, you can transplant them to bigger containers or outside. When you transplant them is up to you, some people like to keep them in their containers until it is time to plant them outside so they are used to the container. Other people like to transplant them outside right away so they grow more quickly. It is up to you and how much work you want.
Once you plant your seedlings outside, water them in and keep them watered. Many seeds need the moisture to help them sprout. You can keep your seeds in small containers for a long time before planting them outside, it is up to you when you want to plant them. Once they are planted outside, they will grow quickly, so enjoy your garden as it grows.
