Vertical Garden Sweet Potato – Growing Vertical Sweet Potatoes On A Trellis

Growing Sweet Potatoes Vertically: Planting Sweet Potatoes On A Trellis

What Is Vertical Garden?

The term “vertical” refers to growing plants from one level up or above another. For example, if you were to plant tomatoes vertically, they would be growing from the ground up. You could also use the word “vertical” when referring to a wall made out of wood or stone.

When you are talking about vertical gardening, it means planting your plants on top of something else. When you start thinking about growing vegetables on a trellis, then you might think about using some sort of support structure like a trellis or bamboo poles for your plants.

However, there are other ways to grow vegetables on a trellis besides using trellises.

In fact, you don’t have to go too far away from nature when it comes to growing vegetables on a trellis. There are many different types of trees that you can use for growing veggies.

Some of these include:

Bamboo (You can even buy bamboo poles at Home Depot)

Ferns (They will make great houseplants! You can grow them inside or outside)

Fig Trees (Most people don’t think of figs as a vegetable, but they make great spreads and jams)

Other types of fruit trees

Of course, if you want to go with something more traditional then there are always the traditional trellises made out of wood that you can use. A lot of gardeners and farmers even use fences and walls built with wooden posts, and these can be used to support your vegetables.

There are some places where you can buy ready-made trellises and poles that are very easy to use. You don’t need any tools to put these together.

All you have to do is put the pieces together, and then plant your vegetable seeds or seedlings in the ground.

These are very easy to use, but they can be a little more expensive than other trellises that you might build yourself. If you are just growing a small garden in your backyard then you probably don’t need to go out and buy one of these, but if you are planning on growing a lot of plants, then the ready-made trellises can be a real time saver.

There is another type of trellis that you can use, and that is known as the “bean teepee.” You can grow a lot of different types of vegetables and even flowers on this trellis, but it is best known for its use when growing beans.

What is a bean teepee?

As the name suggests, it is made out of long wooden poles stuck into the ground in a circle. The tops of the wooden poles are stuck into the ground in the middle to form a cone.

These can be freestanding or even attached to a wall if you want. You can grow anything that needs support around the base of these wooden poles.

As long as you don’t cover up the wooden poles, then they can be used to give height and support to any type of plant.

How Do You Build A Bean Teepee Trellis?

If you are going to build a bean teepee trellis, then you are going to need eight wooden poles that are about eight feet in length. These should be cut from trees that have been harvested in an environmentally friendly way.

These wooden poles should have the bark removed and then they should be cut evenly so that they are the same length. If you are going to build a freestanding bean teepee trellis, then you should put a pole at each of the four corners.

These wooden poles should be planted firmly into the ground about two feet deep.

These four poles will form the base of the trellis. On top of each of these wooden poles, you will then place another pole on top at a 90-degree angle.

These will need to be firmly planted into the ground as well so that the entire thing is very sturdy.

After this, you will repeat the process by placing another pole on top at a 90-degree angle on each of these. These poles will all meet in the middle to form a cone shape.

If this is going to be attached to a wall, then you can stop here. This part of the trellis will simply be propped up against the wall.

However, if this is going to be a freestanding trellis, then you will need to place one more pole on top at a 90-degree angle so that it stands upright. After this final pole is in place, you can begin to weave the plants through the poles.

You can plant anything that needs support such as peas, beans, or even flowers through the poles of the trellis. As it gets taller, you can either prop it up against a wall or you can use the upright pole to attach a string that will support a pole that can be placed in the ground to keep the trellis standing upright.

You don’t need very expensive tools or materials to build this trellis. The tools you need are a saw and a drill to put the poles into the ground.

You can make this as large as you want. You can build a small one by yourself or you can get friends and family to help you build a larger one in just one day.

Whether you need to cover just a small area or you need to cover a large area, these trellises are very inexpensive to build and will last for many years providing they are taken care of.

Building these trellises are not only a great project to do if you need some extra cash, but they are also great for the environment. Not only can you create something that will last for years, but you can do it in a way that helps the planet instead of hurt it.

Using trees that would normally be thrown away and turning them into something useful is a great idea. Whether you need to cover a small area or a large area, these trellises can be built to cover anything from an herb garden to a small field.

This is also a great project to do with friends and family. Not only will you be doing something great for the planet, but you will also be spending time with people you care about.

Building a trellis is a great idea because not only can it help to support the plants that need support, but it can also help to support the earth by recycling and repurposing materials. Not to mention, trellises are great for the garden because they can help protect certain plants from pets and other pests.

Plus, a trellis can be built to be freestanding or to prop up against a wall. Whether you have a small garden or a large farm, these trellises are very easy to build and can make your gardening life much easier.

Why not recycle some trees into something useful to help the environment?

Trees are a natural resource of the Earth that we should try to preserve as much as possible. When trees are cut down, it makes the Earth a little less green and a little more gray. By turning trees into trellises and other garden projects, you are not only creating something useful, but you are also helping to preserve nature.

Building these trellises is also a great way for a woodworker to make some extra money! If you know how to work with wood and you have the tools, you can build these trellises and sell them at a local garden center or online.

There is a market for these trellises because they are functional, practical, and inexpensive to make.

Whether you are looking to make some extra money, save the environment, or both, building trellises is a great way to do it. These trellises are practical, functional, and built to last for years.

This project can also spark your creativity so that you can build more than just the typical trellis. Create something new and innovative that will help you and your garden!

Trellises can be built a number of different ways. They can be very complex or very simple in design.

You could build one out of wood, metal, plastic, or even vine. It all depends on what you have available to build it with and the type of trellis you want to build.

A very simple design could be a wooden A-frame trellis that is three feet tall by four feet wide. This would be perfect for climbing roses.

You could build this out of pine, cedar, or any other type of wood. To save money, you could ask for scraps from a local hardware store. To make it a little sturdier, you can drill bolt holes in the top beam and attach a piece of wood across it for added support.

A more complex trellis design could be a freestanding arch made out of wood or PVC pipe. This trellis could be three to four feet tall and six to twelve feet wide.

Building an arch makes it easy for you to walk under without worrying about getting your head knocked off. To give the arch more support, you could place boards across it on the ground and secure them with landscaping spikes.

If you need a little more height, you could stack two arches on top of each other and attach them together with 2x4s. On the top arch, you could train cucumbers up it or any other type of vine vegetable.

It would look nice and give you more produce!

There are many trellises that you could build, but don’t over think it. Keep it simple and within your means.

Whether you need full height trellises or just some support for a few tomato plants, there is a design here for you.

A trellis can help any gardener, regardless of the experience level. With a trellis, you can grow vines, tomatoes, cucumbers, or anything else that can climb.

Climbing plants are great for gardeners because they take less maintenance and get straight to work producing delicious fruits and vegetables. Trellises are also easy and inexpensive to build. There is no reason why every gardener shouldn’t have at least one trellis in their garden.

Trellises can be built out of many different materials. The most common type of trellis that you will see is one that is built out of wood and stands at five feet tall.

These trellises are great for growing peas, beans, tomatoes, or anything else that can climb. The plants grow right up the strings that are attached to the poles, enabling you to easily pick the fruit or vegetables.

The best part about this type of trellis is the fact that they are meant to be taken down after the growing season is over with. This means that you can store the materials during the winter so that you don’t have to continue to look at it in your yard.

While wood may be the most common material used to build trellises, you can find them built out of metal pipes as well. A lot of people prefer metal pipe trellises over wooden ones because they are more durable.

If you live in an area that gets a lot of strong winds, you may want to build a metal trellis in your garden because these won’t fall over nearly as easily as their wooden counterparts.

There is one main disadvantage to metal trellises. The pipes need to be painted in order to prevent corrosion from occurring.

This can add a little bit to the cost of materials, and it also requires a second step in the process of building the trellis. You won’t have to paint the wooden trellis though, which does save time and money.

Whether you decide to build a trellis out of wood or metal pipes, you are going to need to obtain the necessary materials first. Take a trip to your local home improvement store, or do some shopping online if you prefer.

The links below will take you to guides that show you exactly what you will need to build trellises out of each material. From there, all you have to do is follow the instructions and you will have a trellis in no time.

Metal T

Pipe Trellis

This trellis can be built in a few hours and will provide your garden with support for several years. It is also very easy to build, even if you don’t consider yourself to be the most skilled handyman.

What you will need:

-24 – 5 foot metal pipes

-6 – 5 foot metal cross members

-2 – 5 foot by 8 foot vinyl trellis panels (found at most home improvement stores)

-Tape Measure

-Cordless Drill

-Screw Driver

-Metal Snips

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Pipes

Using the tape measure, measure and cut each pipe into two pieces. When you are done there should be 48 pieces that are five feet long and 24 pieces that are three feet long.

Step 2: Attach the Cross Members

Take six of the metal cross members and screw them into an “X” shape onto a flat surface. Make sure that the cross members are all standing straight up and that they are spread out enough so that the pipes can fit in the gaps.

Step 3: Arrange the Pipes

Arrange the three foot long pipes on one side of the “X” and the five foot long pipes on the other side of the “X”. The shorter pipes go underneath the longer ones.

Step 4: Attach the Pipes

Using the cordless drill and screws, attach the pipes to the “X”. Be sure to put a screw into every hole on the pipe.

Step 5: Attach the Top Panel and Fill Gaps

The trellis is now done. You will need to purchase a vinyl trellis panel if you want one.

These are generally sold separately and you will need to buy one that is five feet by eight feet. You can trim it to fit, but you will need at least four foot of trellis on each side.

Use the cordless drill and screws to attach the trellis panel to the pipes. You can then fill in any gaps or missing pieces with smaller pieces of vinyl piping.

Metal T Cover

If you are going to place this trellis directly in the ground or if it is in an area that gets a lot of rain or snow, then you will need to build a vinyl cover for it. This is a simple process that requires very few materials and can easily be done in less than an hour.

What you will need:

-2 – 16 foot lengths of vinyl gutter

-22 – 4 inch long screws

-Screw Driver

-Tape Measure

-Cordless Drill

Step 1: Attach the Vinyl Covering

The vinyl covering needs to be attached to each side of the t cover. Start by attaching four screws to the top end of the t cover.

Use only two screws on either side, leaving enough room in the middle so that water can drain out.

Using the cordless drill and screws, attach the other ends of the vinyl gutters to the underside of the t cover. Make sure to leave enough room under there so that water can drain out.

Growing Sweet Potatoes Vertically: Planting Sweet Potatoes On A Trellis |

Now your t cover is complete and ready to be placed over your trellis.

If needed, trim any overhanging vinyl with a sharp knife so that everything is even and fits properly.

Before placing the t cover over your trellis, place a lip of the vinyl gutter over the top edge of your trellis. This will make it easier to place the t cover on.

Find a level surface at least two inches higher than the top edge of your trellis. This will allow water to run off and keep your trellis dry.

Place the t cover on this surface, vinyl side up.

Place the trellis on top of the t cover. Water should be able to run down through the vinyl gutters and out into a drain or down the sides.

If you place this on a surface that is lower than the top of your trellis, the water will pool and cause damage to your trellis.

Gutterless Trellis

For some designs, a t cover is not needed. The main disadvantage to this type of trellis is that it will not keep the vines and foliage dry when it rains or snows.

Another disadvantage is that it does not keep animals from scratching through and reaching the vines. However, gutterless trellises can be fairly cheap to build and very easy to construct.

You will need to consider the pros and cons of a t covering versus no t covering before deciding which one to build.

The materials you will need are identical regardless of whether or not you use a t cover.

What you will need:

-12 – 8 foot lengths of PVC pipe (depending on the height of your trellis)

-2 – 4 foot lengths of 1.5″ PVC pipe

-6 – 1.5″ PVC Pipe Caps

-2 – 4’x8′ sheets of 1.5″ rigid insulation

-10 – 1.5″ PVC 90 Degree Elbows (depending on the size of your trellis)

-1 – Box of 1.
