Flowers With Height – What Are The Best Tall Flowering Plants?
The best tall flower plants are those that have long stems, large leaves and produce flowers throughout the year. There are many different kinds of tall flowers but most of them are not very popular because they do not have a high price tag. They tend to be less expensive than other varieties such as dahlias or roses.
Tall Flowers With Big Leaves:
Daffodils, Daisy, Hollyhocks, Nasturtiums and Roses: These are some of the most common tall flowers with big leaves. Daffodil, Daisy and Hollyhock are among the tallest flowering plants. Some of these plants have a height up to 4 feet (1.2 m).
Their leaves can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) wide and 10 inches (25 cm) long. In this case they grow even larger. They are the tallest of all Spring flowering plants. If they are not deadheaded, they will naturally die back after flowering, usually in the summer.
Nasturtiums and Roses fall into the same class as annual bedding plants and perennials. Occasionally their leaves might get a little big but not excessively so. They can be expected to flower throughout the growing season. Their height is usually 1-2 feet (30-61 cm).
Tall Flowers With Medium sized Leaves:
Calendulas, Celosia, Cosmos, Marigolds and Zinnias: These are among the tallest plants with medium sized leaves. They can get quite tall but not excessively so. Their height is usually between 1-2 feet (30-61 cm). These flowers are very commonly used as borders or in containers.
They are also very easy to find at most garden centers.
Calendulas, Celosias and Zinnias are more popular than the other two. These plants have an upright habit and can add a lot of color to your garden or landscape design. They are considered highly decorative and their blooms can be very colorful at certain times of the year. These plants can grow to a maximum height of 5 feet but usually stay shorter than that.
They tend to be very sturdy plants as far as wind and rain are concerned.
Tallest Annual Flowers:
Cosmos, Marigold and Sunflower: These are the tallest flowers that bloom every year. They can get up to 6 feet (1.8 m) or maybe even taller. You can expect them to bloom from midsummer all the way to frost.
They are some of the easiest tall annual flowers to find at your local garden center.
It’s important to note that the tallest annual flowers can require a lot of maintenance. They usually aren’t as frost hardy as the other types of tall flower plants. Tall flowers such as these are prone to splitting if they get frozen after having been watered. They can be expensive to maintain.
Tall flowers such as these are usually grown from seed.
Tallest Perennial Flowers:
Tree Peony, Gaura and Tickseed: These are some of the tallest perennial flowers you can find. They can grow to be about 5-6 feet (1.5-1.8 m) in height.
They tend to produce a lot of flower buds and open at different times during the growing season making them a very attractive flowering plant.
Tree Peonies are some of the most popular types of perennials. They come in a wide variety of colors such as pink, white, lavender and red. These plants have divided lacey looking leaves and a single straight stem that can get quite tall. This is one of the tallest perennial flowers you can find.
Gaura and Tickseed are annuals but can be treated as biennials or short lived perennials in colder climates. Gaura and Tickseed are a little shorter than Tree Peony but can be just as colorful. Tickseed has purple, yellow and white flowers. Gaura has purples, pinks, reds and oranges.
These annuals have spikes of flowers that are more tubular in shape rather than the normal flat shape of most annual flowers.
Shorter Annual Flowers:
Calla, Ginger and Impatiens: These are the three shortest types of annual flowers you can find. They rarely grow higher than a foot (30 cm) and have other types of characteristics that make them unique.
Callas are very popular at weddings. They are known for their uniformity and white flowers. Their flowers resemble the shape of an arum lily but smaller and with a hint of purple on the tips.
Ginger is one of the most colorful annuals you can find. It has large brightly colored flowers that resemble bells. These flowers have a very potent smell to them and can be smelled from a long distance.
Impatiens are one of the most popular types of annual flowers. They are very easy to find at your local garden center or Walmart. Their colors range from white, pink and red. They have a unique shape to their flowers that resembles a wheel.

Bulbs: These plants such as Tulips come up every year from a bulb and not from seeds like most other plants. They have to be planted every year.
Perennials: These plants live for more than two years. They will come back every year unless they succumb to disease, weather or wildlife. Most of the plants listed above are perennials.
