Odontoglossum Plant Care: Helpful Tips On Growing Odontoglossums
The following are some helpful tips on growing odontoglossum plants. These tips will assist you in your quest to grow more beautiful flowers!
1) Do not over water!
Too much water can cause the roots to rot and even kill them. Watering too little can result in root rot which may lead to death of the orchid.
2) Do not use soil from outside!
Odontoglossums require their own natural soil. They do best when they have a well drained organic substrate such as peat moss or composted manure.
Use only non-toxic products to prepare the substrate. Avoid using any type of fertilizer that contains sulfur, phosphate, iron, manganese or other heavy metals. You want to avoid these substances because they can leach into the substrate and affect the health of your orchid.
3) Do not use chemical fertilizers!
Chemical fertilizers can damage the roots of your orchid. If you choose to use chemical fertilizers, make sure you read all directions carefully before applying them to your orchid.
Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper application and watering schedules. Some chemicals can harm the leaves of your orchid if applied improperly.
4) Do not use a soil mixture with sand!
Using a soil mixture with sand can lead to over watering. The orchid cannot easily access the moisture and all the moisture in the soil will eventually drain out leading to root rot and possible death of your orchid.
Using these orchid care tips can help you grow beautiful, healthy orchids!
Odontoglossums are pretty cool orchids!
It takes a little work and dedication to grow healthy orchids. However, it can be very rewarding if you put forth the effort.
Utilize these helpful tips when growing your orchid plants and you will enjoy growing and caring for them.
These plants require high quality orchid bark, small orchid stones, perlite, pumice, and charcoal. These materials help ensure the roots of your orchids have everything they need to survive.
It is important that you do not use any type of soil because it can introduce harmful substances to the roots of your beloved orchid. Also, stay away from chemical based fertilizers. It is important that you use only natural fertilizers because they will not contain anything that can be bad for your orchid.
In conclusion, caring for your orchids properly is the best way to make sure they stay healthy and thrive. Utilize these helpful tips and you will have beautiful orchids in no time at all.
Happy growing!

Increased difficulty in orchid care does not necessarily correlate with increased beauty of the flower. In fact, many of the most beautiful orchids are actually quite easy to care for.
The Cymbidium Orchid, also known as the Boat Orchid, is one of these types of orchids.
Although the Cymbidium Orchid is a bit more difficult to care for than the moth orchid, it still ranks among the easiest orchids to care for. With proper orchid care, your Cymbidium will thrive and bloom for many seasons to come.
What follows is everything you need to know about properly caring for your boat orchid.
Orchid Care: Light and Temperature
Light and temperature are among the most important factors when growing boat orchids. Your orchid’s requirements in these areas will determine whether it grows into a healthy, thriving plant or languishes and dies.
Light: Bright Light
Cymbidiums, like all orchids, require bright light in order to thrive. However, they do not require full sun.
Instead, they should receive bright, indirect light that comes from a west, south or east facing window. An orchid placed here should get 2 to 3 hours of direct sun and then plenty of bright, indirect sunlight for the rest of the day.
If this is not possible, you can place your Cymbidium in an area that receives bright, indirect sunlight for several hours a day. This could be on a lightly shaded porch or outside on a windowsill that does not receive direct sunlight.
Also, placing your plant near a sunny window and then using a timer to provide it with artificial light for the rest of the day can also work.
If you cannot provide your plant with enough light, its leaves will begin to display stripes of green and yellow. These are signs that your plant isn’t getting enough light.
If this occurs, you can place your plant in a location that receives more light or you can try to supplement the amount of light it is receiving with an artificial light source, such as fluorescent lights.
Light: Low Light
If you place your plant somewhere that doesn’t receive any light, such as a basement or an upstairs room that never receives any sun, it probably won’t survive. However, if you place it in such a location and then move it to a brighter location when it starts to decline, it should turn out just fine.
If you put your plant in low light conditions, its leaves will turn brown and begin to decay. If this occurs, do not place it in a brighter location as this will only cause the decay to spread.
Instead, immediately remove all of the leaves and any other decayed or rotting parts. Then place the stem into a shaded, cool location, such as your refrigerator, and wait for new leaves to grow. Once they’ve grown, you can return it to its normal location.
Water
Water your orchid when the soil has completely dried. When you water, pour water into the saucer to drain away excess water.
If you are using a clay pot, you will need to repot your orchid every year or two. After repotting, make sure that about a centimeter of the pot’s top piece is above the level of the soil.
This will ensure that your orchid doesn’t receive too much water and rot.
Humidity
Cymbidiums prefer higher humidity levels. This can be provided by placing the plant on a pebble tray, which is an open dish of pebbles that has water in the bottom.
The dish can be placed on a larger dish filled with sand or gravel, which in turn should be placed on a heat plate set on low (or any other suitable means of providing humidity).
The pot should also be placed on an open tray to allow the air to more easily circulate around it and the plant’s roots. Be sure that the pot doesn’t come in contact with water in the bottom of the tray, though.
Also, be sure to empty and clean the tray every two weeks or so.
The use of a humidity tray will also allow you to water your plant less frequently, as it will collect water from the bottom of the tray and provide extra moisture to the plant. However, don’t allow the pot to actually come into contact with the water.
Orchids are very susceptible to fungus and other diseases. To prevent this, be sure to wash your hands before touching your plants or repotting them.
You should also sterilize the tools that you use on the plants by placing them in a 10% bleach solution for a few minutes. As for your plants, you can wipe them with a solution of bleach and water to prevent infection.
At this time, no special care needs to be given other than those listed above. Just keep it watered and don’t expose it to strong drafts.
You can keep your plant in almost any location that is convenient for you. However, it should definitely not be in direct sunlight as this can cause the leaves to turn brown and dry up.
Other than that, just keep an eye on the plant and be sure to remove any dead leaves from it.
Orchids are very resilient plants. They can survive almost anywhere, but you’ll have to keep them well watered.
If you want one as a pet, the Cymbidium is probably not for you. However, if you want a plant that can survive almost anywhere and look beautiful while doing so, then this is the plant for you.
If you want to learn more about orchids in general, I highly recommend reading “The Orchid Enthusiast’s Companion,” which you can find at your local library.
Enjoy your new pet!
