Marionberry Plant Description
The marionberry plant is native to Europe, Asia Minor (Turkey), North Africa and the Middle East. Its scientific name is Rubus idaeus. The fruit of this plant are called marmalade or marzipan. They have been cultivated since ancient times and they were used as candies until the early 20th century when artificial sweeteners became popular. Today marmalade is still widely consumed.
Marmalades contain sugar, which makes them sweet. The most common type of marmalade is made from sugar, water and lemon juice. Other types include strawberry jam, pineapple jam and peach jelly.
Marionberry Plant Care Tips
The best way to grow marionberries is indoors in a pot or hanging basket system with bright light and plenty of ventilation. The soil should be well drained and moist but not soggy. A good drainage system is essential so that the roots don’t rot away. If there is too much rain, the root system will dry up and die. The marionberry plant prefers full sun but it does tolerate partial shade if kept well watered.
Watering once every two weeks during hot weather and less often during cooler months. When the temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, watering twice a week becomes necessary. Always use warm water for the marionberry plant.
Marionberry Plant Care Tips
Marionberries are hardy and resistant to many common diseases. They can also thrive in poor soil conditions with a little maintenance. A strong trellis is essential for the marionberry plant since it tends to produce a lot of fruit. You can train the plant to reach the top of a chain link fence or trellis system that is at least 6 feet high. It can be grown with bamboo or any other fast growing vine.
The plant prefers to be tied to a support and does not grow well without one. The plant can also be grown in large containers that are at least 18 inches wide (20 to 30 inches is preferred). It should be pruned in late winter or early spring if there is no space for growth.

Its flowers are white or pink and are smaller than a dime. The fruit is similar to a blackberry but is smaller, sweeter and less seedy.
They produce in summer through fall, usually from early August through October. They can be eaten fresh, used in jams, jellies, syrups, baked goods and even wine. It is also known as the “Oregon Beefwood”. It grows wild along streams, forests and thickets throughout Oregon.
The marionberry plant is part of American culture in the Pacific Northwest. It is the official fruit of the state of Oregon. The marionberry was first planted in 1930 by a farmer named Fred McDougall who lived in Buena Vista east of Salem. He planted the marionberry from a berry he found on a bush in a field near his home. By 1935 he had developed his own special marionberry hybrid that was hardy enough to thrive outside.
He named it after his daughter, Marion McDougall. After his death in 1980, his farm was used as a filming location for the movie “The Goonies” which boosted its popularity and sales.
A marionberry is both a sweet and tart berry with a unique flavor. It is smaller than a blueberry and doesn’t have the bitterness of the blackberry. It can be eaten fresh, used in jams, jellies, syrups, baked goods and even wine.
Marionberries are at their peak during mid-August to September. They can be found at farmers markets and specialty grocers.
Most marionberry plants grow wild in Oregon, but they can also be grown in your backyard or in pots. If you live outside of Oregon you can find marionberry plants for sale online.
