A phylactery is a container used to hold the ashes of the dead. When someone dies, their body is burned and the remaining ashes are placed in a small container shaped like an urn. The urn is then enchanted so that it can never be opened.

These vessels are very hard to destroy and are often used to hold powerful creatures back from returning from whence they came.

Physical Resurrection:

A risky process that involves the dead individual being brought back from the dead. This is not a function of necromancy, but rather a natural talent some individuals have. The soul of the dead individual must first be captured and then brought back to the body.

A powerful ritual is then cast over the body to awaken it. It’s a very taxing ritual, and only works with humans. It can’t be cast over multiple people at once, the ritual can only work on one dead body at a time. If the body isn’t fresh, then the ritual usually fails.

It takes months for a body to become physically resurrected from death. The longer the body has been dead, the more decayed it is, and the less likely the ritual will be a success. This process can take years and requires frequent upkeep and maintenance to keep the individual alive and healthy.

Physical resurrections are very taxing for the individual body. There are complications that can easily arise due to the age of the body. Muscle decay, organ failure, brain death, and many other bodily functions can fail.

It is not unusual for a body to be resurrected only to enter a coma shortly after.

The amount of willpower an individual brings into the process also plays a major role in whether or not it succeeds. An individual who struggles against the ritual has a much higher chance of failing. Those with little to no willpower have a much better chance of success, but often die shortly after they’re resurrected.

This process is very expensive and can only be afforded by the extremely wealthy. Powerful nations that have made policies to support it rely on their slave trade to bring in fresh bodies for their necromancers to use. Very few individuals can afford such a luxury and are usually in the highest social classes.

If a body has been dead for more than a week, it cannot be resurrected due to the amount of decay that would’ve already set in.

The physical resurrection is the most complex ritual of all necromantic practices. It requires an extensive knowledge of the human anatomy, strong magic abilities, and a vast amount of resources to pull off.

Necromancers who perform this ritual are often given the title “lich”, which is short for “Lichedr”.

Scourge:

Scourges are undead abominations that have been twisted by dark magic. They are often created in factories or “factories” where necromancers use large vats to create an endless supply of scourge bodies. The bodies are harvested from those that have been condemned to death, the criminal element, and the dead.

A necromancer will fill these tanks with various bodily fluids, chemicals, and ground up bodies. They will then cast a ritual to infuse the bodies with negative energy and see what comes out as a result.

The scourge are an incredibly morbid creation, as they are completely mindless and have to be constantly prodded into battle through dark magic. They’re often weak, but their numbers are bolstered by the fact that they can’t die, at least not permanently. Killed scourges can be raised again from the dead eventually.

The tank that creates these abominations is often labeled “the meat grinder” by those that have had to fight them.

Only the most sadistic and cruel necromancers practice this type of magic. They often work in factories, creating a never-ending supply of scourge to be used for their nation’s military endeavors.

Chaos:

The dark magic known as Chaos is unique in that it is not controlled by any nation. It’s often used by mercenaries, orques tribes, and other groups who do not have access to a nation’s support. A few wizards have also chosen to forsake their nations and practice chaos in remote locations out of sight.

Necromancers can draw upon the power of Chaos in place of Fel. They summon and create undead horrors. They can be used for any number of things, from infiltration to frontline assaults.

Oxlip Plant Info: Information On Growing Oxlips Plants - igrowplants.net

Chaos often draws upon dark and negative emotions. It is a wild force that can inspire detrimental affects against those that channel it. Users of Fel are less affected, but all who practice it slowly loose their minds to insanity over time.

This has lead to the stereotype of chaos users being insane.

A group of chaos users. Most are likely to be orques or from orque tribes, mercenaries, or from non-aligned tribes.

Creatures of Chaos:

There are a number of creatures that draw upon the power of Chaos. The most notable are the svelk, elves that traded their very souls for the ability to wield dark magic centuries ago.

These elves often have pale white skin and black hair as their very souls are dyed with the color of midnight. They are much like the elves they originated from, except they’ve traded their mundane lives for the ability to draw upon the power of chaos. They often become mercenaries, or wander to other parts of the world to practice their skills.

Chaos magic can also be found in the creation of abominations. These include horrific beasts like the centaurs, harpies, minotaurs and similar creatures. While these creatures have been “tamed” to an extent and can be used in battle, they cannot be controlled and are considered too wild for use in other ways.

Chaos magic is also found in the form of auras. Auras surround powerful beings, such as the Emperor. They affect the minds of others and can change the tide of battle.

While rare, some individuals can be born with a natural aura. Most auras have static affects, but there are rumors of sentient auras, such as the one possessed by the Emperor. These auras can actively affect the mind and are more like a magic spell than an innate trait.

The final notable feature of chaos is the existence of daemons. The daemons are immortal creatures that draw their power straight from the realm of chaos itself. Their nature is to destroy and consume, and it often times on the mortal realm.

They are not native to Nalzambor and appear only when called, normally by powerful magic. They are known to ally with mortals who can draw them into the mortal realm.

Oxlip Plant Info: Information On Growing Oxlips Plants from our website

Nalzambor is a land filled with strife. It has been for centuries as petty warlords fight for control of land. However, not all are in a rush to reach unity.

Some find the status and order of things adequately satisfying.

The Empire is the most notable empire in Nalzambor. It is lead by the Immortal Emperor, an ancient being who has ruled for nearly two millennia. His name was long lost to history, but he is known by the title given to him for his legendary deeds.

The Empire stretches from the bitter cold of Rask to the blazing desert of Durgan and everywhere in between.

Most of the population lives as thralls under their respective tribes, nations or city-states, but some do enjoy the benefits and security that come with living under a stronger government. Slavery still exists, but is not as prominent in the Empire as it is elsewhere.

The Empire is very technologically advanced compared to the rest of the world. Guns, cannons, and a wide variety of mechanical devices are used in war. There are internal struggles from region to region, but the government is always attempting to keep things together and remain stable.

The Rask frontier is mostly controlled by criminal organizations that do not acknowledge the Empire’s authority. Most citizens are either indentured servants or under the influence of criminal overlords. The land is run by criminals, for criminals.

The Felkan Kingdom is the strongest nation in Nalzambor. It was once a proud military state, but has since become a proper kingdom with an emphasis on order and law. Most prominent criminal organizations in Rask pay the Felkan Kingdom for protection, as they have an increasingly large military.

The Felkan Kingdom also has strong ties to the Empire, enough that it is considered a vanguard against Rask. If war ever broke out between the Empire and the Felkan Kingdom, the Empire would lend aid to the Felkan Kingdom.

The Felkan Kingdom has a powerful navy, strong military and well trained citizens. It has influence over several islands off the coast of Rask as well as expansionistic ideas towards Rask proper.

The Orcs of Drak thrak are a series of city-states and small tribes located in the southern region of Rask. Recently, the tribes united to form a single nation. They have strict rules regarding magic and only allow its use by Shamans who are tasked with keeping the faith alive.

The rest of the population is primarily warrior-type people.

The Orcs of Drak thrak have no real interest in expansion, but they do defend their territory zealously. They also have no major allies, and trade mainly with the Forsaken of Nuro and those that visit their lands for various reasons.

Oxlip Plant Info: Information On Growing Oxlips Plants at igrowplants.net

The Forsaken are a group remnants of the Neroth cult that was destroyed during the events of Chapter 2. The survivors fled to various places, but eventually overcrowding and lack of resources in their current locations forced them to merge into one large community. Their leader is Gideon, the only remaining known priest of Neroth.

With his guidance, they are attempting to resurrect their dead god.

Their current location is unknown. They could be anywhere.

The gnomes of Flogger tribe live in the mountains of Rask. They occasionally visit the surface world to trade (and occasionally steal) various things.

As their name suggests, they are a tribe of gnomes that mostly consists of tinkers. They are generally friendly towards other people, so long as they aren’t evil. Their leader is Chief Togbang.

The Felkan Kingdom is ruled by the royals. Currently, there are two in power, a brother and sister royal pair with the siblings being twins. The king is Eldolith ex-Morningstar, named so because of her infamous father who was the head of the Morningstar mercenaries that worked for the Empire decades ago.

The queen is Albreda.

You may remember her being the shy, quiet girl that was in Sister Catalina’s class during your time at the Academy. Back then, Albreda tried to avoid all contact with others. It is a bit surprising to you that she managed to become queen.

While she still isn’t what you would call social, she is a lot more outgoing and friendly than she once was. The siblings get along, for the most part. They have the same goals in mind for the kingdom. One of those being expanding into Rask.

The Felkan Kingdom has a strong military and powerful navy. They also have trade routes with several other nations and are generally on good terms with them all.

The new Western Confederacy is made up of five towns; three Human, one Elven and one Dwarven. The capital is Madeilen, which is located in the former Thon region. The leader of this new confederacy is former Thon’s Reach Mayor Daniel Mathers.

Oxlip Plant Info: Information On Growing Oxlips Plants - igrowplants.net

He started rebuilding the town not long after the Empire abandoned it and eventually took control of the other four towns, forming the confederacy with them. The Dwarves of Kal Torlin refused to join, claiming that their mined out and collapsed tunnels were not worth the effort it would take to make them liveable again. The Elves of Elvendale outright refused to join, much like they did during the Empire. As for the Holgard Republic, the Confederacy and it have been trading insults over the Rasktrade river.

The new Confederacy is actually not on particularly good terms with the Kingdom, despite both being on the same side in this war.

The Felkan Kingdom and the New Confederacy have been trading insults with each other for along time. This has escalated into a few small skirmishes in Rask, but nothing major has happened yet.

Unsurprisingly, the Church of Joachim has next to no presence here, instead being replaced by various Varsite priests preaching the worship of Dendrin. The only Joachimites in the area are a few wandering missionaries. They keep to the major towns, trying to spread the word of Joachim and avoid hostile folk.

Finally, there are the Everhale Elves. Their village is actually located in the former elven forest region of the Arat province. Like the dwarves of Kal Torlin, they were dug out of the mountainside when the Empire abandoned the area.

Unlike the dwarves, they actually welcomed the gnomes’ entrance into the Arat province. The reasons why are unknown to most and speculation ranges from them wanting to exploit any new trade opportunities to simply wanting to help fellow underground dwellers.

The elves have a reasonably sized military, but have not involved themselves in the war. It is known that they trade with both the Felkan Kingdom and the New Confederacy. Given how close to Arat province they are, there are many theories to why they have not become more involved in the conflict.

The most popular one being that they want to remain friendly with all parties for trading purposes.
