Planting Wildflowers – How To Care For A Wildflower Garden

How to care for a wildflower garden?

When it comes to wild flowers, there are many things one needs to consider when growing them. Some of these include:

1) Do not over water!

Water your plants only enough so they don’t drown. Too much will cause the soil to become soggy and rot the roots.

2) Don’t fertilize your plants either!

Fertilizing will kill off any beneficial microorganisms in the soil which could prevent disease from spreading. If you do want to add fertilizer, use it sparingly and only after all other methods have failed.

3) Use compost or manure to mulch around your plants.

Compost or manure is made up of decaying organic matter such as leaves, wood chips, etc., that contain nutrients that can be used by plants. Mulching helps to protect the plants from wind and sun damage.

4) Do not let your plants grow too tall.

Taller than 2 feet (60 cm) is considered invasive because it makes it difficult for other species of flora to survive in the area. Plants need room to spread their seeds and flourish. You may want to try growing them in containers if you have space available.

How long does it take for my wildflower garden to flower?

This will vary from region to region. In general, most wild flowers will start to bloom around May and should continue to bloom until late June or early July. Having a second (sometimes even third!) blooming cycle throughout the summer is not uncommon in some locations. Keep in mind however, that you will get more flowers the earlier you start planting from seed and the longer the season is in your area.

How do I know when to plant my wildflower garden?

The best time to plant most wildflower seeds is in the spring. You can plant them in fall as well, but keep in mind that some varieties (especially the perennials) may not bloom until the second year. If you live in an area where the temperature gets really cold, you may need to protect your plants in the winter or replant each year.

How do I get my wildflower garden started?

Prepare the soil. You can do this by tilling it up and adding in compost and fertilizer. Rake the soil smooth so that it is nice and flat and any big chunks that remain can be broken up by hand.

Mark out your plants. If you have planted in a straight line, just measure the distance between each plant with a stick or something similar and make a mark with a stick or rope. If you want to create a pattern such as a checkerboard, measure the width of one plant and make that mark with a stick or rope then measure the width of another and make another line across the row. Continue doing this until you have the entire pattern mapped out.

Plant your seeds. If you’re not sure exactly how far apart to space them, most seed packages will provide this information or you can look it up online. Follow the directions on the package for how deep to plant the seeds as well.

Water everything. You don’t want to over water, but you also don’t want to over dry. Keeping the soil moist is essential for growing healthy wildflowers, so if you have rain, water your plants and then wait a few days before watering them again. If it hasn’t rained water them every couple of days until it does.

Add in fertilizer. If you’ve added manure or other nutrients to the soil before planting, this isn’t really necessary. However, once your plants are a few inches high you can add in fertilizer or bone meal to help them grow bigger and stronger. You can even do it right away if you want, just make sure you follow the directions on the package so that you don’t over or under fertilize.

Watch and wait. Now you just have to be patient and watch your seeds grow! It may take a few weeks before you start to see anything and it’s going to depend on the weather, but before long those little seeds will turn in to thriving wildflowers!

Other Ways To Attract Butterflies

While growing native flowers is an important part of attracting butterflies to your yard, there are other things you can do as well.

Planting flowers is obviously the first thing that comes to mind, but there are other things that you can do as well.

Think Like A Butterfly

Butterflies are attracted to different types of food. While some like milkweed have nourishment for them, others just like the taste. Here are a few of the most popular:

• Fennel: This plant looks like dill, however it doesn’t have those strong aniseed flavours. It’s light and sweet tasting and while it might not be for everyone, it’s a big hit with the butterflies.

• Echinacea: Also known as coneflower, this plant has dark purple or pink flowers that stick out and are great for attracting butterflies. They’re easy to grow from seed and thrive in most soil types.

• Purple Coneflower: This is another variety of Echinacea with well…purple flowers! They’re also a favourite among butterflies and are hardy enough to grow in most soil types.

While these three plants will draw in the butterflies there are other plants that you can add to your garden that they will also find attractive. Some other great choices include:

• Butterfly weed: While this plant may be known by its other name, it’s actually not a type of milkweed. It does however have flowers that butterflies love and is a hardy plant that grows well in almost all climates.

• Mexican Hat: This plant gets its name from the shape of its flower which resembles a sombrero. It’s a hardy plant that grows well in dry soil and is one of the earlier flowering plants.

• Spiderwort: While technically a wildflower, this plant is often found growing in fields and along roadsides. It has a unique shape and colour and its vibrant blooms stand out.

While there are many different types of flowers that you can grow to attract butterflies, it’s important to always choose those that are native to your area. This will ensure that the butterflies will be drawn to your yard rather than just passing through on their way to other places.

Adding Fish To Your Pond

While you can certainly add fish to your pond to make it more attractive, you need to make sure that you’re going to be able to maintain it properly before getting started. Here are a few things that you’ll need to do in order to maintain your fish population:

Habitat

You’ll need to create a habitat suitable for your fish. This means that you’ll need to add plants and rocks in order to create the right environment for them to thrive in. While your smaller fish may be content with a filter and a heater, you’ll definitely want to add some plants to provide them with shelter as well as more favourable living conditions.

Supplements

In order to keep your fish alive and thriving, you’re going to have to feed them on a regular basis. You can do this by hand, or you can buy fish food from a pet store and add it to their diet.

Cleaning

Eventually your filter and heater will get clogged with fish waste and other material. In order to keep your water clean, you’ll need to change at least 25% of it once a week. This means draining out a significant amount of water. You can then refill it, and your fish will be happy in the clean water.

If you’re going to add fish to your pond you’ll need to make sure that you’re willing to put in the extra time and money in order to maintain it properly. Also, you may want to consider having a full-size aquarium instead as they require less maintenance and often have a lower death rate.

Getting A Dog

You might not think of dogs when you think of wildlife in your backyard but there are many breeds that were specifically bred for hunting and living outside. These include:

•Hunting dogs: These dogs have speed, scent, and stamina and are able to track and chase prey for long periods of time. They can also survive independently and don’t need to be fed or taken care of on a regular basis. Examples include: Pointer, Setters, Retrievers, and Hounds.

There are many different breeds of hunting dogs but they all share the same characteristics which make them perfect for a family that enjoys the outdoors.

•Sight Hounds: These dogs have excellent vision and are built for speed. They’ll be able to spot prey and catch them with relative ease. Sight hounds can be a little more skittish and harder to train than other dog breeds. Examples include: Greyhounds and Saluki.

These types of dogs are perfect for people who want a pet that they can take jogging or hiking with them. Sight hounds are generally able to go longer without water and food than other dog breeds so they’re perfect for people that like to stay outside for long periods of time.

Before getting a dog there are a few things that you should consider. Dogs are fairly high maintenance and need a lot of attention and affection. If you don’t plan on spending a lot of time at home, then perhaps getting a dog isn’t for you. Dogs also need to be stimulated, whether it’s through walks, jogs, or playing fetch. If you don’t plan on doing this often then a dog may become bored and restless which could lead to destructive habits.

Dogs also require a large financial investment. Before getting a dog, consider whether you can afford to feed it, take it to the vet, get it grooming services, and give it the care that it needs. Dogs can also be very social creatures. If you plan to keep it indoors most of the time then you should consider getting two dogs so they aren’t lonely. Dogs are also living creatures and can pass away just like any other pet.

This may be difficult for a child to understand so it’s best to prepare them for the loss in advance.

If you’re ready for the responsibility of a dog, then there are many breeds that can thrive outside. Dogs are able to survive at extreme temperatures and are generally better able to defend themselves from any predatory animals. Some dogs may require a little bit of training but they will generally be worth it when you’re able to take them on outdoor adventures.

Other types of pets that can thrive outside include:

•Reptiles: There are numerous types of lizards and snakes that can live outside in the wilderness. They’re perfect for people who are interested in collecting different species.

•Birds: Caged birds can be a great source of joy for anyone. They can sing and provide companionship to anyone who owns them. They do need regular care and can quickly become distressed if they’re not kept in the proper conditions.

•Butterflies and Fish: There are many different species of butterflies and fish that can be kept outside. They’re great for observing and provide a calming effect on people.

•Small Mammals: There are many different types of small mammals that can live outside in hutches. These include rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters. They’re generally fed a diet of carrots and other vegetables.

As always, remember to take the time to train your pets. They can be a great help if you need them to perform in a show or competition but only if they’ve been trained properly. Make sure to give your pet the care that it needs so it stays happy and healthy.
