Leaves Falling Off A Rose Bush – Why A Rose Dropping Its Leaves?

A rose’s petals fall off when it gets cold or if the weather changes. If you have ever seen a small, white flower with red spots on it, then you will understand what I mean. When the temperature drops and the sun shines on your garden, some of those tiny flowers start to turn brownish color and eventually drop their petal covers. Some of them even fall off completely!

Why do these petals turn brown?

They lose water from the air because they get too hot. The same thing happens to your plants during winter months. You might think that the reason why you see your roses’ petals turning brown is due to lack of light, but it isn’t that simple. The reason behind this phenomenon is actually quite complicated and involves many factors. Let me explain everything to you.

The first thing that causes the petals to turn brown is oxidation. Oxidation occurs when oxygen reacts with sugars in the plant’s tissue.

One of the main reasons why petals turn brown is because of sugar content in the leaves. Sugar molecules contain carbon atoms and each one contains two hydrogen atoms attached at right angles to each other (Figure 1). So the way leaves are structured is a bit similar to a ‘+’ sign.

If you have ever spilled juice on a piece of paper and left it in the sun, then you know what happens next. The sugar from fruit juice reacts with oxygen in the air and turns brown, just like what happens to your plants.

But how does this process happen with petals?

It’s quite simple actually. The stamens contain tubes that carry liquid, nutrients and water up to anthers where plant pollen is made and released. When bees or other insects get in this pollen they usually get stuck and cannot get out, leaving them trapped inside the stamen.

But why does this process happen with petals?

The answer lies in the rose’s unique ability to make food. The rose has ‘petals’ (actually sepals) that protect the more sensitive parts of the flower, such as the reproductive organs. This is also where petals are made and stored. The petals provide vital protection to these organs in much the same way that our skin does for us.

These organs are very delicate and can be easily damaged by animals or even by you!

So what do you do if something harmful approaches?

The answer is simple. You move away from it as quickly as possible! In the same way that you instinctively protect your soft, tender body parts by moving away from a harmful situation, the petals of the rose contract and hide any organs that are particularly vulnerable.

Of course, before they do so, they make sure that they don’t lose too much water since this can lead to their deaths. This is exactly what happens when the weather is too cold.

The temperature drops and in response, the petals contract and hide the sexual organs of the flower (stamens and pistils). Since they are so close together, some of them turn brown due to air pollution caused by cars and factories. As you can see, there isn’t just one cause of this process, but several different factors.

As a result, not all the petals turn brown or drop off altogether. Some of them manage to survive the winter and re-emerge in the spring to provide a splash of colour when everything else around you is starting to look a little bleak.

So remember, when you see your flowers dying, it’s important to just enjoy their beauty while it lasts.
