Growing Herbs At Home: Making An Herb Garden In Your Yard
The following are some common questions about how to make a herb garden at home. If you have any other question, please feel free to contact us.
How To Make A Herb Garden At Home?
When it comes to making a herb garden at home, there are many things which need to be considered before starting your project. Some of these include;
What kind of soil do I want to use? What type of plants will grow well in my soil? How much space do I need for my herb garden? Can I afford to buy all the materials needed for building a herb garden at home? Will I be able to grow enough herbs or vegetables for myself and my family? Is it possible to get good quality herbs and vegetables from local markets? How long does it take to grow herbs or vegetables in my herb garden? How do I keep the soil healthy and productive? Do I need to fertilize my herb garden with composted manure or mulch? What kinds of lighting system can I use for my herb garden? What kind of ventilation system can I install in order to control humidity levels inside the greenhouse? Where should the herbs and veggies go once they’re grown in my herb garden? Is my herb garden big enough to supply all my family members and friends?
These are just some of the things you need to consider before you start your herb garden at home. These questions do not even include the materials needed for building an herb garden such as soil, seeds, containers, plants, lights, ventilation system and much more. The only way to find out how to build an herb garden is to experiment and try different things.
How Big Should My Herb Garden Be?
The first thing you need to consider when starting your own herb garden is how big it should be. You might say “as big as possible” to which I would agree, but if we’re talking about a realistic size then that’s not really the case.
Herb gardens, like any other garden, need maintenance and time. If you’re a busy person or don’t really have the time to look after your garden in the way that it requires then it might all become a bit too much trouble and you might end up not using it at all.
You should also consider how big your family or group of people are that will be using the herbs and vegetables that will be grown inside your herb garden. If you have a large family then you’re going to need a bigger garden to produce enough herbs and vegetables for everyone.
That is why it’s always best to start small and continue to build up your garden over time as you learn more and more about the process of building an herb garden.
It’s also important to think about the types of herbs and vegetables that you want to grow in your herb garden. Different herbs and vegetables need different levels of sunlight and water, so you might need to adjust the size of your herb garden depending on the types of plants that will be grown in it.
For example, some herbs grow better in shade and don’t require as much sunlight as others. On the other hand, some herbs shouldn’t even be planted inside and need all the sunlight they can get.
Also think about how much time you have available to you every week. Again, if you’re a very busy person then you might want to start small and build up the size of your herb garden as you get more experienced in growing herbs and vegetables.
Finally, think about your experience level when it comes to building an herb garden. If you’ve never grown anything before then you might want to start with a small project and work your way up from there. On the other hand, if you’re an experienced gardener then you might want to start big and challenge yourself by growing a garden that produces enough herbs and vegetables to supply an entire town.
With all those things in mind, here are some guidelines for building an herb garden of different sizes:
Small Herb Garden – This would be perfect for people who live alone or a couple. It would also be good for someone who only wants to grow a few herbs and doesn’t have much experience in building an herb garden.
This size herb garden could be as small as a 2 foot by 4 foot wooden box (1 square meter), but a 1 square meter wooden box would be just fine as well since you don’t need to grow that many herbs anyway. You should be able to get everything you need for this size herb garden at your local home improvement store.
Medium Sized Herb Garden – This size garden would be for people who have limited space in their yard or people who want to start off with a sizable herb garden but don’t want to spend too much money. It could also be for someone who has a medium sized family or group of people that will be using the herbs that are grown.
This size herb garden should be around 4 square meters (4×4 square feet), which is large enough to produce a substantial amount of herbs and vegetables, yet small enough to build without having to spend too much money or remodeling your backyard. You could either make the raised bed out of wood or you could use cement blocks (make sure to put some form of mesh between the blocks so that the dirt can drain, see diagram at right).
This size herb garden could be built by most do-it-yourselfers. The only tool that you might need that you might not have is a miter saw, but you could get away without it if you have to. This size herb garden should be fairly simple to construct.
Larger Herb Garden – This would be for people who have a lot of people in their household or group that will be using the herbs, or somebody who just has a lot of free time on their hands and wants to build something large.
This size garden could be as large as 16 square meters (4×4 square meters), although you could get away with just a 8 square meter garden (1×4). In either case, the herb garden should give you enough herbs and vegetables to supply an entire restaurant.
Building this size herb garden is probably more suitable for experienced do-it-yourselfers and builders. You’re also going to need more tools such as a miter saw, concrete drill, etc. but if you’ve made it this far then you probably already have these tools or know somebody who does.
This project is not that difficult as long as you take your time and follow the instructions. It will just take longer and require more effort.
How to Build a Raised Bed Garden [ edit ]
The first step in building any raised bed garden is to plan everything out. You need to take into consideration how big you want the garden, where you want to put the garden, how you will support the sides of the garden, and what you will use to fill the garden (gravel, sand, soil, etc.).
Once you have planned everything out, then you can start building your raised bed garden. For this example, we will be building a 4×4 foot garden with wooden sides and a soil/gravel mixture for the fill.
