Rock Purslane Care: How To Grow Rock Purslane Plants In The Garden
The name “rock” refers to the fact that these plants are usually found in rocks or boulders. They grow in rocky areas, such as mountainsides, cliffs, and other places where there is little or no soil. These plants have been known to grow up to 2 feet high!
These plants are native to Europe and Asia. They were introduced into North America in the early 1900’s from China. There are two species of rock purslane, one native to California and another introduced from Japan. The second variety was brought over from Hawaii in the 1950’s. Both varieties have similar characteristics; they both grow well in acidic soils, thrive under low light conditions, tolerate drought conditions, and produce large clumps of leaves with red flowers when mature.
When it comes to growing rock purslane, the best way is to keep them out of direct sunlight. However, if you live in a place where the sun shines all day long then rock purslane will do just fine. If not, then you need to provide some shade for your plants so they don’t get scorched too badly during hot summer days. If you can provide them with some filtered sunlight then that’s even better.
Rock purslane will also thrive just fine without any soil at all. It actually grows much better without soil as it helps the plant retain more water and stay hydrated longer. In fact, rock purslane can actually live underwater! It has a natural affinity for wet places so if you place your container with plants near a running water source such as a stream or small waterfall then they will be very happy.
If you live in a place where the ground is always moist then that’s ideal, but make sure to keep an eye on your plants because if they start to rot then they will quickly disappear. It’s better to plant them in a container filled with sand and soil so that they have some “backup” in case the ground becomes too wet or dry.
These plants are native to mountainous areas so they love growing in rocky places. You can add some small river stones or aquarium gravel to the container so that your plant has something to “grip” onto. The gravel will also help with drainage as long as you don’t fill up the container too much. Just make sure there is enough room for water to flow through.
Another thing you can do is place your container in a shallow stream of running water. This will keep the soil moist most of the time and will actually keep your purslane plants healthy and happy. Be sure to let all the water flow through the container so that it doesn’t become stagnant. If your plants start to wilt during the day, then move it directly in front of a fan for a few minutes.
Rock purslane is a succulent, so it can withstand long periods of drought. If you want your plants to grow bigger then you need to water them every once in a while. Wait until the soil has almost dried out completely before watering again.
When it comes to feeding your purslane, you have a few options. You can either fertilize it with an acid fertilizer (such as sulphate or nitrate) or you can feed it insects (yes, insects). If you choose to go the insect route, then you need to capture about 5-10 small insects such as aphids or young thrips. You can then place these in a container with your plant and it will slowly feed off the insects as they decompose (make sure to remove any left over carcasses every once in a while). The insects will also help the plant to grow.
If you choose to use fertilizer, then it’s best to dilute it first. You can either mix the fertilizer with water according to the directions on the package or if it already comes in a liquid form then you can directly pour some of it into your container. It’s best to feed your purslane plants every 3 months during the growing season, but make sure not to overdue it or your plants will most likely die.
Rock purslane can also be propagated easily from just a small clipping. If you have an extra container laying around then you can fill it with some moist soil and take a little bit of your plant to put inside. It will quickly grow into a full plant in no time.
Rock purslane is an excellent plant to have around the house because it naturally repels lots of insects. If you have a problem with ants or other small bugs, then simply place some of your purslane plants in these areas and they will quickly disappear.
If you have a dog or cat that likes to eat plants then it’s best to keep your purslane in a container so that it can’t be harmed. If you’re worried about your pets still being able to reach it, then the plant can also be placed high up on a shelf so that it can’t be touched.
If you have small children then it’s best to keep your purslane in a container as well. Although the plant isn’t toxic, some kids have been known to put plants in their mouths so it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Purslane can also be used for medicinal purposes. If you suffer from skin irritations then purslane can act as a natural ointment.
