Sugarcane Juice Benefits: What Is Sugarcane Good For?
The first thing that comes into your mind when you hear the word “benefits” is probably sugar. Sugar is one of the most common ingredients in soda pop, candy bars, cookies, cakes and other sweets. However, there are many different types of sugars. There are natural sugars found naturally in fruits and vegetables like sucrose (table sugar) or fructose (fruit juice). These sugars are not harmful to humans but they do have some negative effects on our bodies.
There are also artificial sugars made from petroleum products such as high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which is used in soft drinks, sweetened breakfast cereals and other foods. HFCS has been linked with obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Then there are synthetic sugars such as those produced synthetically from corn starch, glucose and dextrose. Synthetic sugars have been linked with cancer, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
Artificial sugar substitutes may cause tooth decay and dental cavities. They can also lead to weight gain because they contain little nutrients. Some of these artificial sugars have even been banned in certain countries due to their adverse effects on human health.
However, there is one type of sugar that can improve human health and it has no harmful effects on the body. This sugar comes from the sugarcane plant, also known as saccharum officinarum.
This particular type of sugar is known as sucrose. The sugarcane plant looks like a giant grass with long, thin stalks. It grows in warmer climates such as Africa, Australia, Southeast Asia and certain islands in the Pacific Ocean.
The sugarcane plant has large, green leaves and grows in clumps of stalks that can reach up to 10 feet tall. Each stalk can have as many as 100 thin, blade-like leaves rising from its base.
These leaves are harvested and crushed to extract their juice before being dried in the sun. These dried leaves are what is known as bagasse.
Sugarcane juice has many uses in cooking and food preparation. It is used to make sugar, molasses, rum and other alcoholic beverages.
It can also be used in a variety of foods such as jams, jellies, baked goods, candies, puddings and soda pop. The juice can be boiled down to make a thick syrup called gur or jaggery that is used to add sweetness and flavor to foods.
Most importantly, however, sugarcane juice has significant health properties. It helps the body.
It can prevent diseases like cancer, cardiovascular disease, liver disease and renal failure. It can also reduce the risk of getting type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and osteoporosis.
Sugarcane juice is made up of a number of minerals and vitamins. It is a good source of potassium and vitamin C.
One serving (150 ml) of sugarcane juice provides 90 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C. This vital nutrient helps the body produce collagen, aids in the repair of muscles, helps heal cuts and wounds and contributes to the strength of bones and teeth. Vitamin C is also necessary for the proper absorption of iron.
Sugarcane juice is also a good source of potassium. It has about 30 percent of the recommended daily value per serving.
Potassium is important for maintaining the electrical activity of the heart, which helps the heart beat at a regular rate. It is also necessary for keeping the blood pressure at normal levels.
Sugarcane juice has been shown to lower the levels of “bad” cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood and raise the level of “good” cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein or HDL). It also helps prevent blood clots from forming in the arteries.
These health benefits make sugarcane juice an ideal supplement for people with heart disease or at risk of developing heart disease.
Sugarcane juice helps lower blood sugar in people who have diabetes. It should be consumed in place of sugar where possible, but diabetics should be careful about how much they consume because it is still a source of sugar.
Sugarcane juice is a suitable sweetener for people who are allergic to aspirin as it contains salicylates, which have a similar chemical structure to aspirin.
