Zone 9 Plants For Fall And Winter
Plants are often planted too early or too late in zones 7 and 8. Here we will explain why it is necessary to plant plants in zone 9.
When to Plant Vegetables In Zones 7 & 8?
If you have a small garden with no special requirements, then you may want to start your vegetables in zone 7 or even 6. However, if you have a large garden or need some extra space, then you should plant your vegetables in zone 8.
Because in zone 8 there are many different types of vegetables which require different time to grow. Some types of vegetables like carrots take only 2 years while others like onions and garlic may take up to 5 years. So it is better not to wait until they become big before planting them in zone 8.
However, if you have a larger garden or need to plant vegetables sooner than two years, then you can plant them in zone
7. If you do so, then the vegetables will be ready much earlier.
You can also choose to plant your vegetables in zone 6 instead of zone 8.
How Many Years Should I Wait Before Planting Vegetables In Zones 7 & 8?
Many vegetables take 2 full years to grow in zones 7 and
8. Vegetables like potatoes, green peas, beans and corn take only 1 year.
Carrots are one of the exceptions and they can be planted in zone 8 after only 1 year.
You should wait until the last frost of spring before planting any vegetables in zone 8.
When Should I Start My Zone 7 And 8 Gardens?
There is also a rule to follow when planting a garden in zone 7 or 8. You can plant your garden whenever you want, but you will have greater success if you wait until the first day of spring.
This means that you can plant your seeds in zone 7 or 8 after January 1. You should not plant anything before this date.
What Can I Plant In My Zones 7 And 8 Gardens?
There are many different types of vegetables which all take different time to grow in zones 7 and 8. You can find a complete list below. This is not an exclusive list. You may also add other types of vegetables depending on your specific needs and preferences.
Carrots, turnips, and spinach all take only 1 year to grow. They can be planted in zone 8 after only 1 year of waiting.
Beans, peas, tomatoes, potatoes, and corn are the fastest growing vegetables. They take only 2 years to grow.
Onions, cabbage, and cauliflower take 3 years to grow.
Carrots, turnips, spinach, potatoes, and onions take 4 years to grow.
Beans, peas, corn and tomatoes take 5 years to grow.
Sweet potatoes take 6 years to grow.
Garlic takes 7 years to grow.
The complete table is given below:
You should choose different types of vegetables for your garden in order to have a steady supply of food over the years. If you want to learn more about growing different types of vegetables, you can find a complete guide here.
What Time Of Year Should I Plant In Zones 7 And 8?
You can plant your seeds at any time of the year. However, there are certain times which are better than others. The spring is one of the best times since many of your plants will grow quickly enough to produce food before the first frost.
However, you can also plant your seeds before the last frost of fall. The only risk is that you may need to provide extra warmth for your plants if the weather isn’t warm enough. You should also be aware that some vegetables like tomatoes and eggplants do not grow well in colder weather.
You have more options when planting in zone 8 since it doesn’t freeze as much as zone 7.
What Else Should I Know About Zones 7 And 8?
You should never plant a garden in zones 7 and 8 until at least the last spring frost has passed.
Your garden in zone 8 will be more successful if you add extra protection against the cold such as a greenhouse or some sort of fence to keep out the winter winds. Fences also allow you to keep an animal in the fenced area so it can eat any foliage that would otherwise be destroyed by the cold.
Some plants are more tolerant of colder weather than others. You can find a complete list of cold resistant plants here.
During the summer, it doesn’t rain as often and it doesn’t snow as much as it does in the winter. However, there are other types of weather that you need to be concerned about.
During the spring and fall, it can get very windy. If your roofs aren’t sturdy, then you may suffer property damage due to the wind. It’s a good idea to go around and check all of your buildings to make sure that the roofs are intact. You should also bring in any plants that are close to the edge of your roof so they don’t get blown away.
During the summer, you will experience thunderstorms which can cause property damage as well as start forest fires. It’s a good idea to keep a watch out for these and try to take care of any problems before they get too big.
During the fall, you will experience tornadoes. These cause the most destruction, so it’s important to take shelter immediately when you see signs of one approaching. You can learn more about tornadoes here.
The final and most dangerous type of weather is blizzards which happen during the winter. These cause the most destruction and can wipe out entire towns. You need to be prepared if you want to survive one. You can learn more about surviving blizzards here.
Running a farm isn’t just about growing your own food. There are many other products that you can create to improve the quality of life for yourself and your family. The guide below explains how to make several common products:
Soap – Making your own soap is very simple. This recipe requires you to mix a bucket of lye and a bucket of oil (olive or vegetable) and then heating them on the stove. You will need to stir the mixture until it becomes a creamy color. At that point, take it off the heat and let it cool. The last step is to put the mixture into molds (you can use old cans) until it hardens.
Cheese – Making your own cheese isn’t as hard as you think. You will need to start with milk (cow, goat or sheep) and then add some vinegar or leave it out entirely depending on the type of cheese you want to make. Heat the milk until it’s warm then add the vinegar or other ingredients. Let it cool and it’s done. The next step is to let it sit in a cool, dry place for several hours to a couple of days.
Chocolate – Making your own chocolate can be difficult, but the taste is well worth the effort. You will need to start with cacao seeds (you can find these by searching for cacao pods). Crack them open and remove the seeds, then put them in a container of water and leave them overnight. This will make them soft and easier to grind. After they are ground to a pulp, mix in sugar and other ingredients depending on the type of chocolate you want to make.
Then, boil the mixture until it becomes thick and creamy. Pour into molds and let it cool and it’s ready to eat.
Wine – Making your own wine is an excellent way to improve the taste of the fruit that you grow in your orchard. You can make this with any type of fruit, but it’s best to start with fruit that has a higher sugar content. You will need to carefully crush the fruit and then mix in water and yeast. Leave it in a glass container for several weeks, stirring every couple of days. Once most of the liquid has turned into wine, you can put it in bottles and then leave it to age for several months or even years.
Beer – Making beer is similar to making wine. You will need to start with barley grain (you can also use wheat or other grains) and mix in some yeast. Leave it in a barrel for a couple of weeks and stir it every couple of days. If you want to make hard alcohol, you can mix in some sweet fruits to add flavor after the beer has completed the primary fermentation stage.
Meats and Cheeses – The easiest way to make these types of food is the preserve them. You can do this with a smokehouse or just dry them in the sun. Start by cleaning and preparing the meats and/or cheeses, then you can hang them up to dry (perhaps on a rack) or put them in your smokehouse. To make a smokehouse, you need to build a small shack and put a hole in the bottom with a wood fire burning inside. Let the smoke billow out into the shack and it will dry your food.
Other Food – There are other ways to preserve food if you are unable to make these recipes. For example, you can salt or honey your food to preserve it. Pickling in vinegar can also work.
Making Your Own Clothes
If you are a skilled tailor or have some experience with weaving, you can try to make your own clothes. This can save you a lot of money and allows you to always have a consistent supply if you grow plants that can be used to dye cloth.
One good place to get started is flax. This is a plant that can be spun into sturdy fiber. It can then be woven into sturdy cloth called linen. This cloth is particularly useful for making clothes as it gets softer after every wash and can withstand a lot of wear and tear.
If you want to make woolen or cotton clothes, you will first need to grow the plants that go into these types of fibers. Once you have grown the plants and harvested the fiber, you can spin the cotton or wool to make thread and then weave it into your clothes.
To dye your clothes you will need to gather different types of plants that contain natural dyes. Different plants can be combined to make new colors. For example, to create a red dye you can mix together madder root, oak apples, and goat tallow.
One of the key concepts to creating new colors is understanding the color wheel. This is a circular diagram that shows you how different colors relate to each other. You can find color wheels in many art books or online. Once you understand how one color wheel works, you can easily work out others for different colors.
Once you have found out what plants you need, you can mix the dye and dip your thread (or whatever material you are using for clothes) into it to dye it that color. This process can take some time and needs to be left for several hours or, in some cases, days.
These are just some of the skills that you could potentially learn. There are many more out there for you to discover and, with any luck, bring back to civilization one day.
Many people have the misconception that, since you are venturing out into the unknown, you will encounter monsters on a regular basis. While this may be true in some instances, it is quite unusual to encounter them.
Most monsters live far away from any known civilization and, even if they do wander near, they tend to mind their own business unless attacked. It is very rare for a monster to deliberately seek out human settlements to attack. They would much rather hunt prey that tries to attack them, which consists primarily of other monsters.
Monsters are creatures that either have high aggression attributes or have a tendency to be hostile towards humans. Aggressive animals, such as bears and wolves, may attack if you get too close or if you appear weak. These can be deadly encounters if you are not careful.
Other animals, such as deer and rabbits, are timid creatures that will almost always flee from you. They may sometimes be found close to human settlements since they are often drawn towards areas of high plant growth.
Some normal animals, such as horses, donkeys, and mules, can be tamed by humans. You can ride these creatures, allowing you to travel much faster than on foot. Some may be willing to accept you as their rider without needing to be tamed. Others will require you to tame them first, which usually involves gentling the creature until it allows you to approach it and feed it.
Some animals can be trained to perform various tasks, such as hauling objects or fighting in gladiator-type events. Animals that can be trained in this way are dogs, bears, and large cats.
You can sometimes find tame creatures that have been abandoned by their owners. In certain towns, it is common practice to release a creature within the town limits as a form of population control. Most of the time, the abandoned creatures will be hostile towards you. There are cases where particularly friendly animals have been found wandering around and may even assume that you have come to look after them.
Some creatures may be acquired by finding them in the wild and earning their trust. Creatures that can be acquired in this way are lizards, monkeys, and other similar animals.
It is not unheard of to come across humans that are willing to join you. Some may have been outlawed from their own society and live as outsiders looking to join a new one. Others may be slaves that have managed to escape from their masters. These recruits will usually have their own skills and equipment, which can be useful.
Killing or robbing humans may result in you gaining their equipment and weapons. This can be useful, as it allows you to equip your more aggressive members, while still keeping the society cohesive. However, it may have negative results if word gets around that you are raiding human towns. This will usually lead to your destruction if you continue, or at least cause other groups of people to be hostile towards you.
You may also find other groups of people that you can assimilate into your group. This is usually done through trade or by negotiating with their leader. This will likely require a certain amount of wealth on your part, as well as a minimum number of people to make the effort worthwhile.
Some races have prerequisites that must be met, such as requiring a certain in-game year before you can attempt to recruit them, or having a minimum number in your society.
Goblins are small, green, and generally unpleasant creatures. They are very common in the more forested areas of the world, such as the Hergin hills. Goblins tend to value strength over all else when it comes to hierarchy, which means that you will need to be pragmatic when dealing with them. Their love of practical jokes can sometimes put them at odds with larger societies, but their thirst for blood and battle usually sees them well integrated into any area undergoing conflict. They tend to be very fertile, so populations increase quickly when they are not killed by larger societies.
Goblins have a complex naming system based on their hierarchical position in their particular society. As such, they find the straightforward nature of human names to be somewhat quaint and amusing.
Goblin equipment tends to be of poor quality, though they utilize whatever they can get a hold of. They tend to have a lot of throwing weapons, as well as shorter range melee weapons. They have a tendency to use poisons on their weapons when able.
Goblins are biologically inclined to bowleggedness, which tends to cause them some problems with their legs. It is not unusual for goblins to have difficulty keeping up longer distances, though their life span is much longer than that of humans.
Be careful about attempting to employ goblins into your own army. They will almost certainly be willing, but their chaotic nature causes them to be unreliable in the thick of combat.
