For hundreds of years, humans have tried to use chemical fertilizers to correct this problem, but to no avail. The only way to create soil that can support life is to allow forests to grow and then let them slowly turn into farmland.
This process takes a very long time and in the meantime, soil quality continues to decline.
So, even though the earthworm is one of the most important creatures on the planet, it also has one of the most precarious positions. Without the earthworm, life on this planet might not be able to survive because the soil would die and nothing could grow anymore.
In that case, there would be no more humans and no more earthworms; a rather grim prospect to say the least!
Still, it is hard to believe that a creature as lowly as the earthworm could have an impact on the entire world. Even a super-intelligent being like yourself couldn’t imagine such a thing in your wildest dreams!
